A MAN OF KAMTSCHATKA
Uncoloured engraving from the Atlas of the official account of Captain Cooks Third Voyage. Capr King described the Kamchatkans as "very round and flat faced, large heads, high cheek bones & small eyes. The forehead very low, nose small & a great distance between that & the chin, in proportion to the rest of the face". Cook's Third voyage was unprecedented in the amount of money spent on publication with no expense spared on production of the plates. As Sir Joseph Banks said, the expenditure was 'to contribute much to the ornament of the work, as our plates are far better engraved than preceding ones.the publick have a right to that indulgence'.A superb panorame of Avacha Bay. A Kamtschatkan village is shown on a sandy peninsula with 5 Russian log houses. A very fine copy. 24 x 18cm. A very fine large margin copy. An early impression. N° de ref. de la librería 172330
