Descripción

San Rafael, 1979, Presidio, US first edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 6 1/2 x 9 1/2, Fine/Fine condition, xiii, 376 pages, a few illus, notes, bibliog, index----------------------------------------------------------Thomas Sidney Jesup served in the U.S. Army for over half a century. Throughout his career he was meticulously honest, completely honorable, capable and sincere. It is ironic, then, that he is remembered today for an alleged violation of a white flag. Few men have been more cruelly—or more unfairly—maligned .------------------------------------------------------------Jesup entered the army in 1808 when the military service was in its infancy. After gaining a reputation as a young combat officer in the War of 1812, he was appointed quartermaster general in 1818, serving in that post for forty-two years. He played a major role in the development of the U.S. Army in its formative years. He established the Quartermaster's Department as a bureau in Washington, devising a system of accountability that influenced army regulations for years to come.Unfortunately, in the 1830s, Jesup became a victim in the bitter battle between Whigs and Democrats. As President Andrew Jackson's commanding general in the field during the Creek and Seminole Wars, he became a favorite target in congressional strife. His contributions, character, and achievements make incredible the accusations leveled against him, that in ordering the capture of Osceola he violated a flag of truce. Nevertheless, for five years he was a political football, his motives misunderstood, misrepresented, or deliberately distorted. N° de ref. de la librería 38216
