Descripción:

Colorful pictographic / pictorial map, folding to pamphlet 9 x 4 inches, color cover illustration, red blue and white map on verso, very good condition. Attractive pictorial map of the main auto routes serving St. Louis and vicinity with the Chain of Rocks Bridge in the upper right hand corner. The bridge was the project of two brothers, John R. and Tom J. Scott, who sought better access to, and egress from, the city; it was opened in 1929. The bridge was extremely narrow and featured a 22º turn in the middle, unanticipated when construction began but necessitated by the separate locations of bedrock supports on the two sides of the river. A financial maelstrom, the bridge was sold to the city of Madison in 1939. A message on the folded map states: "This folder is for the convenience of motorists of the United States who cross the Mississippi at St. Louis. The best routes to, through, and around the city are shown." It was signed: John R. Scott, President of the Chain of Rocks Bridge. The toll for passenger cars was 25¢. The colorful pictorial map is 11.75 x 17.75 inches. Although undated, the costumes, airplanes and vehicles depicted support a mid 1930s date. N° de ref. de la librería
