Cockrell's account of the battle follows that of "the old pamphlet. yellow with age and crumbling" the sole copy of which was found by Cockrell in an attic in Corinth, Mississippi. This copy bears a choice presentation inscription on the front flyleaf from Cockrell (1884-?) to a fellow Civil War scholar, author of the 1959 title "The Mystery of the Merrimack": "Presented to / Edward E.
