Descripción New York. George Braziller, Publisher. 1967., 1967. Folio. 37cm, (printed in West Germany). Limited to 1000 number copies, this being #937., this facsimile edition comprises the two parts of the Lorsch Gospels from the Biblioteca Documentara Batthyaneum in Alba Julia, Rumania, and the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana in Rome. It was published on the initiative of Wolfgang Branunfels, who also wrote the introductory text accompanying the volume. The six colour engravings were made by Brend'amour, Simhart & Co. Munich, from photographs by Robert Braunmuller. The color printing was by Dr. C. Wolf & Sohn, Munich, the reproduction and two colour offset printing of the monochrome plates by the Graphische Anstalt Ernst Wartelsteiner, Munich-Garching. The book was bound by hand by Willy Pingel, Buchbinderei, Heidelberg. The Zanders special matt art paper was provided by Hartmann and Mittler, Munich. Bound in quarter vellum and red linen boards, a fine copy in dust worn grey cloth slipcase (cds1). - Founded in 764 near Worms, the abbey of Lorsch was among the wealthiest of Carolingian Imperial monasteries. The Abbey's oldest library catalogue, compiled about 830 - contains the first reference to the Gospels which are now believed to have been written and illuminated about 810. The text is written throughout in two columns and set in richly decorated coloured borders. Each two page spread has a distinct design, and many of the decorative motifs have been adapted from other crafts: goldsmiths, silk-weaving and ivory-carving. Borders and scripts together combine to produce a series of decorative compositions which unfold in new color harmonies from page to page. Book. Nº de ref. del artículo: 5438

Descripción George Braziller, Inc., [New York], facsimile edition,1967, 1967. Limited edition of 1000 numbered copies. Vellum-backed red cloth, with separate accompanying introductory text bound in plain wrappers, with slipcase, folio, 38 cm, facsimile: 416 pp including 54 pp in in four colors and silver and gold; commentary; 23 pp, ills. From a contemporary review by Lawrence S. Thompson: "The whole manuscript, separated since the Counter-Reformation in England, the Vatican, and Karlsburg (Gyulafehérvâr, Alba Julia; presently Roumania), has now been brought together in a masterful re-production. Originally produced at Aachen about 810,probably on the commission of Charles the Great, the earliest record of the manuscript is in the surviving catalogue of the Abbey of Lorsch (near Worms; founded 764). The book probably came to Lorsch during the administration of the Abbot Adelung, a favorite of Charles. The ivory panels on the covers have a curious history, and they provide some evidence on the separation of the original volume. Mr. Braunfels provides all available facts on this point. The Latin text pages of the four Gospels are in gold uncials, and in Matthew and Mark the beginning of each chapter is emphasized by a line of red uncials. The Capitulare Evangelorum, alone, is in Carolingian minuscule, meticulously written in the interest of legibility for any reader. The two-column text is richly decorated by colored borders, with themes drawn from the work of goldsmiths. weavers, and ivory- carvers. Motifs from Mediterranean antiquity are predominant. Especially noteworthy are the elaborately decorated leaves of the Canon Tables, titles and initials, miniature portraits of the Evangelists, and the impressive portrait of Christ, Maiestas Domini (p. 36). There are six large miniatures, consisting of portraits of the four Evangelists, the Christus, and the picture of the ancestors of Christ at the beginning of Matthew (p. 72). The Evangelists resemble princes rather than churchman, possibly a result of local conditions in Aachen. There are identifiable influences on the miniatures, from Byzantine through late Christian models. Mr. Braunfels' descriptive essay is a memorable contribution to the critical literature of mediaeval book painting and palaeography and could stand as an independent contribution. The facsímile is impeccable. and it deserves a home in the special collections of all research libraries." Copy No. 784. Fine in slipcase. Nº de ref. del artículo: ABE-43004

Descripción New York: George Braziller, 1967. Large heavy folio, 478pp, including 54 color plates. Original quarter-vellum over red cloth boards, in fine condition in slightly worn publisher's slipcase. Limited to 1000 copies, this copy with the separate pamphlet of commentary often missing. "This complete facsimile of the Lorsch Gospels includes six color engravings from photographs by Robert Braunmuller, and many [48] color-printed plates, though most of the production consists of high-quality monochrome plates. first written in 810AD, the four [since separated] parts which comprise the Lorsch Gospels were [re]united in the Coronation Hall of the Holy Roman Empire in Aachen, Germany on the occasion of the 1965 exhibition of the Council of Europe 'Charlemagne, His Achievements and Influence.' The respective owners co-operated to photograph the entire manuscript and the ivory covers during the exhibition. Thus a foundation was laid for the reconstruction of the manuscript in this fine facsimile edition, which must serve in the place of a unified whole.". Nº de ref. del artículo: 110441
