Acerca de

Sinopsis:

Frank Porter is little more than a shell of a man, burdened down by the weight of guilt he feels over the violent death of his unfaithful, uncaring wife, Barbara; lashed by the tongue of his ageing mother, Emily; and nearing the rocks of bankruptcy through his constant mismanagement of-both the-family farm Wheal Anna and the agricultural contracting business that he planned to be the means to financial security and the restoration of his pride.

His daughter, Bess, is the sole light of his life his only reason for existence until the arrival at the large but rundown Granby Hall, overlooking the River Tamar, of the wealthy Colonel Loving-ton and his beautiful daughter, Joanna, who are both seeking the peace and introspection of rural Devonshire life. This lovely woman, born to a way of life and bred in a society completely foreign to Frank Porter, is inexorably, unaccountably drawn towards the remote and austere farmer as he is to her. She is unsure of herself after her divorce from her army officer husband, and somewhat alienated from the environment which she has known throughout her life; whilst he is human driftwood upon the ebb and flow of the tide of life-truly a union of the lonely and the lost. The result of this union dominates the second half of the novel, bringing forth trouble, tragedy, but eventual triumph.
