Any discussion of the days when sail dominated maritime trading brings to mind the clipper ship Cutty Sark. Given the ship's fame it was almost inevitable that noted maritime historian Basil Lubbock would record its glory days, and those less so. To compile the "Log" he consulted many former crew members, other seafarers, researched the ship's logs and those of her counterparts and rivals. He was also able to use photographs from the collection of Captain Woodget, who Lubbock describes as her "best known and most successful commander " His account includes many photographs of the Cutty Sark's contempories. In 1896 the 25 year old ship was sold to a Portugese who had her re-rigged as a barquentine for further trading. In 1922 the old and delapidated ship was purchased by Captain Dowman who restored her original name and the Red Ensign. His foresight was to provide a tangible reminder of the era of the classic clipper ship. First published in 1924 by James Brown and Son with this reprint in 1954 published by Brown Son and Ferguson, 332 pages including seven appendices and index, 50+ b/w illustrations, mainly photos, some art, nine detail plans include three fold-outs, intext tables.
