DESCRIPTION : iv, 64 pages; 15 cm. CONDITION : carries bookstamp of Emil Bjarnason and bookplate of Paul Bjarnason; overall VG+ in black cloth hardcover with gilt lettering to front cover. CONTENT/Efni:: Written while the author was resident in Canada, the book includes considerable Canadian content, including two poems commemorating Canada and North American Icelanders as well as some poems praising prominent Canadian Icelanders including Gestur Palsson - as well as a translated poem from Tennyson. SUBJECTS: Icelandic Canadian Literature; Icelandic Literature/Íslenskar bókmenntir; Poetry/Ljóð; Poetry in Translation/Ljóðaþýðingar; translation from English/Þýðingar úr ensku AUTHOR BIO: The author, Einar Kvaran, a leading Icelandic novelist and critic, emigrated to Canada Canada in the 1880s, where he edited the pivotal Icelandic-Canadian newspaper Logberg and took a prominent role in Icelandic-Canadian community and political affairs; in 1891 he was selected President of the Icelandic Liberal Association of Manitoba. He returned to Iceland about 1895, after a ten year residency in Canada (Kristjanson). His early works were writen under his previous name, Einar Hjörleifsson; later he was known as Einar Hjörleifsson Kvaran, as a consequence of which both names are found in bibliopgraphies, though the library database in Iceland uses Kvaran. Stefan Einarson, in his History of Icelandic Prose Writers (Cornell University Press, p. 237) states that "Einar H. Kvaran, in America [read Canada] 1885-95 wrote his first masterpiece, Vonir (1890) in Winnipeg over a purely Icelandic-American [read Canadian] motif". Early and scarce item in Canada.
