Lord Rothschild's circle of notable friends of distinction represented in this volume include Queen Victoria, Anthony Trollope, William Gladstone, Benjamin Disraeli, Robert Browning, Henry James, Guy de Maupassant, and many others. Each collotype holograph is preceded by a brief introductory note, with the name of the personage framed in a decoration by Roger Excoffon based on architectural motifs at Waddesdon Manor. Printed at the University Press, Cambridge; the plates printed at the University Press, Oxford. Roxburghe Club member Sir Kenneth Clark's copy, with his name printed in red in the roll of members; also with the bookplate of Roxburghe Club member Jayne Wrightsman. A near fine copy; pages clean and fresh; hinges lightly rubbed; mild foxing to the pastedowns, last couple of leaves, and textblock fore-edge; a few tiny marks on the covers. Scarce. Barker 223.
