Acerca de

Linking Mission to Money, Allen J. Proctor's second edition of his popular book, helps nonprofit leaders positively impact an organization's mission by achieving financial goals. Being a nonprofit leader, and especially a board member, is a big responsibility. This second edition of Linking Mission to Money ® is full of tools and resources that make that role more manageable and personally rewarding. Allen says "the benefit and the liability of being a board member lies with each member of the board. This book is intended to help volunteers satisfy their commitment by explaining finance as the core of a holistic approach to fulfilling board responsibility." Written specifically for non-financial experts, Linking Mission to Money uses conversational style and short, digestible chapters discussing planning, priorities and sustaining mission through adversity.

From the Author:

Since the 2004 publication of the first edition I have been grateful for the positive response to the book and the numerous helpful comments and suggestions from readers and attendees at my seminars.  Inspired by this response, I have corrected errors, introduced improved explanations and illustrations, added introductions and key questions to each section, and updated material for events and issues that have occurred over the past six years.  I also wanted the second edition to be of value to nonfinancial readers as well as leaders of nonprofits who may not serve on a board.

The second edition retains the goal of the original book:  to help nonprofit leaders to be successful by explaining finance as the core of a holistic approach to fulfilling their responsibilities.  This broad-based approach aids in linking money to mission, mission to action, and action to accomplishment.  It argues that finance is far more than a set of numbers; rather, it can serve as the primary tool to carry out the most important obligation:  to know what is going on.  The financial picture of a nonprofit can be painted in a way that is understandable to everyone who is responsible for the strategic direction of a nonprofit. Like any specialty, finance can either be made complex or be made understandable.  If it appears complex, the people responsible for the organization's finances--including board members--may not understand the situation well enough to make it understandable.
The approach to finance described in these pages will help all nonprofit leaders to participate equally and fully in financial reviews and deliberations and fulfill their duty as fiduciaries.
