Descripción

From her earliest childhood memories. through much of the Victorian era and up till shortly after WWI, Anna Maria Wilhelmina Spencer -Stanhope, after marriage Pickering, recalls life in England, and on travels, as experienced by the wealthy gentry of those times. Though her book is dotted with Lords and Ladies, Dukes and Dutchess, Royals, Generals and notables from politics, the law and the nobility, this is a down-to-earth pen picture of life as she saw it, and thus is probably an accurate account of the circles in which she moved. The two parts of the book are titled Childhood and After and Second Childhood and reflect the casual approach Wilhelmina takes to her story telling. In the second the bulk of chapters are prefixed- "Tales of." and cover subjects such as . The Pre--Raphalites and Others , Relations and Others, .Canny and Uncanny and .Places. An unusual book in many ways, with its illustrations including a number of silhouette profiles (often used as chapter tails) and a facsimile of a picture letter inserted at its original size ,which is smaller than the book pages, other intext illustrations include sketches, cartoons, poems, plans and a mystery stone inscription. This book has become quite scarce. 388 pages including index, 20 b/w plates including a tissue protected frontis of the author, other illustrations as described above. Blue hard covers with guilt front/spine titles VG, shallow depression to front cover adjacent spine at centre, wear to spine extremities/corners with latter bumped, circular impressed decoration lower corner both boards, ink gift inscription (May 1925) top FFEP with later name/address below, both FEPs partly browned, both board slightly loose but well attached, text block is excellent.
