Descripción ReInk Books, 2017. SoftCover. Estado de conservación: New. Reprinted from -1790 edition. NO changes have been made to the original text. This is NOT a retyped or an ocr'd reprint. Illustrations, Index, if any, are included in black and white. Each page is checked manually before printing. As this reprint is from very old book, there could be some missing or flawed pages, but we always try to make the book as complete as possible. Fold-outs, if any, are not part of the book. If the original book was published in multiple volumes then this reprint is of only one volume, not the whole set. This paperback book is SEWN, where the book block is actually sewn (smythe sewn/section sewn) with thread before binding which results in a more durable type of paperback binding. It can also be open wide. The pages will not fall out and will be around for a lot longer than normal paperbacks. This print on demand book is printed on high quality acid-free paper. Descripción John Stockdale, London, 1790. First of this illustrated edition. London: John Stockdale, 1790. Two volumes. 8vo. [Leaves 21.3 cm tall.] xii [i.e. vi], [8], 389 pages and [vi], 456 pages, plus [14]-page publisher's catalog at rear of vol. II. Complete with 17 plates, being fourteen full page plates by Stothard, engraved by Medland, including frontispiece in each volume; an engraved title page, with vignette, in each volume, also engraved by Medland after Stothard; and a frontispiece portrait engraved by Medland for Chalmer's "The Life of Daniel De Foe," which appears in vol. II (pp. [367]-440). The second volume also includes a list of Defoe's works (pp. 441-456). Bound in full calf of the period or perhaps a bit later, with red and green leather spine labels, ornate gilt decorations on the spines, raised bands on the spine, gilt borders and turn-ins on the covers, marbled endpapers, and all edges gilt. Boards skillfully reattached by a professional binder with matching paper to inner hinges and one outer hinge; the other outer hinges being mended with very fine tissue. Both bindings are now sound, show little wear, and are very attractive on the shelf. Internally a good copy, with foxing to the plates and facing pages (including the titles), as is often the case. Some scattered foxing and soiling to other pages, mostly affecting margins and in no place affecting the legibility of text. A tiny bit of worming to gutters only of last several pages of terminal ads. Still a respectable set. FIRST STOCKDALE EDITION AND THE FIRST WITH THESE ILLUSTRATIONS. Thomas Stothard (1755–1834) was one of the most prolific illustrators of his day. "Many of his illustrations were for reissues, as in his celebrated illustrations for John Stockdale's edition of Defoe's Robinson Crusoe in 1790 (a sketch for 'Robinson Crusoe Building his Canoe' is in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford) and it is clear that Stothard's images were an important factor in their popularity." --Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
