Descripción:

This is "The Life of Samuel Johnson L.L.D." by James Boswell, published by the Modern Library as a Modern Library Giant (G2). As stated on the title page, the book is complete and unabridged, with notes. The text of this reprint follows that of Malone's sixth edition. There is an Introduction by Herbert Askwith. The contents include the original Advertisement by Boswell and a Chronology. there are a considerable number of footnotes throughout the text. Needless to say (but I'm saying it anyway!) , this is one of the greatest biographies in the world - that is no exaggeration! The following is excerpted from the dust-jacket blurb : "When Boswell first met Samuel Johnson (1709 - 1784), the great man of his dreams was 54 years old; their friendship formed the memorable part of Boswell's life, and is described inimitably in his famous biography. Johnson's favorite indulgence was to talk; Boswell's great idea of success to elicit memorable conversation. Boswell is almost equally admirable as a reporter and as an interviewer, as a collector and as a researcher. "The Life of Johnson" was written on a scale unknown to biographers before Boswell. Wherever English is spoken, it has become a veritable sacred book; the sober Encyclopedia Britannica says that it has pervaded English life and thought 'in the same way that the Bible, Shakespeare, and Bunyan have done.' INTERIOR -- There is a blind-stamped (embossed) ownership indication stamped near the top of the front free end-paper (Dr.Daniel Sperber); there is also a date stamped on the rear free end-paper (FEB 03 1968) - likely stamped by the original owner.
