Two Volumes. Portrait frontispiece, 3 folding plans coloured in outline [posiiton of Sikh & British Armies in 1849 at Goojerat; India showing Keane's route 1839 & 40; Central India Agency & route of the Malwa Column 1857], viii, 470pp; viii, 487pp. Pencil ownership signature "W D Fane, Novr 1896" to front free endpaper in vol I - no other ownership marks. Original cloth gilt, some staining, marking and bumping to cloth but both volumes sound with clean firm text blocks, edge tear without loss and second map with tear along one fold without loss. A very substantial and now rather scarce military biography. Durand [1812 - 1871] went from Addiscombe into the Bengal Engineers. In 1838 he went to Afghanistan and headed the party that blew up the Cabul Gate at Ghani. He was Private Secretary to Lord Ellenborough the Governor General 1842-44; at Maharajpur, Commissioner of Tenasserim 1844, Sikh War at Chilianwala & Gujarat in the Sikjh War 1848-9; Political Agent at Gwalior, then at Bhopal; fought in the Indian Mutiny; AGG in Central India under Lord Canning; Lt Governor of the Punjab 1870 but killed when his elephant's howdah was crushed under a gateway entering Tonk the following year.
