Also includes frontispiece portrait of General Hays and 8 additional full-page illustration plates. "One of the largest collections of Civil War letters in print; this almost unknown book affords a splendid insight into the Army of the Potomac up to the Wilderness Campaign, where Hays was killed." Nevins I, p. 89. A thick, heavy book. NOTE: EX-LIBRARY, please expect the usual library markings and indicia. Bound in sturdy black cloth-covered boards with embossed gilt lettering on the front and the spine. The book is clean, complete and intact. It remains square and straight, and is still firm in its binding despite tearing in the gutters over the interior hinges both front and rear. The spine and exterior hinges were at some point reinforced and secured with clear archival tape, but the boards remain well-attached. The corners are worn down, but there is otherwise only light wear to the cloth at the board edges. The embossed gilt lettering remains clear and legible. The text-block still remains firmly snugged against and attached to the spine (the backstrip). No pages are loose, none are torn, and none are missing. Internally in Very Good condition. The pages are only faintly age-toned, and all pages are clean and stain-free. All text is clear, crisp, and quite legible, and all illustrations are sharp and intact. We detected no writing, underlining, highlighting or markings of any such kind in the text. A great reading, research, or reference copy.
