Descripción

"There are several things which I would like to say about this book. The first is that I have been given a rare privilege and opportunity. The generosity of Herb Hanson (SS 1943} in funding this project has made it possible to do more in telling the stories of this institution than could be done in the past. Luckily I've had some good models to emulate-George C. Tanner, Charles W. Newhall , Nuba Pletcher, James M. L. Cooley, Reginald Kramer. These men wrote principally about Shattuck; St. mary's Hall and St. James, sadly, have received less attention in print, though Mary Stevenson Thomas {SMH 1951} and Bishop Stephen Edwards Keeler both provided straightforward, very readable summaries in booklet form. When people have referred to this book as a 'history' I've immediately felt uncomfortable. To them I've said two things: {1} I'm not a historian, and {2} even if I were, I couldn't pretend to have the objectivity required to 'do' history about this subject. I've merely claimed that I've been writing 'a book for the Sesquicentennial.' I have tried hard to be accurate in reporting facts and fair in expressing opinions, but I feel sure that some mistakes will come to light-and for such I take full responsibility. It has been impossible to include everything I had hoped for. The original manuscript, alas, was considerably longer than could be printed. A few copies of that unabridged version, with complete footnotes, timelines, music, index, and bibliography are being bound, and one will be available in the Hirst Library on ther Shattuck-St. Mary's School Campus for any who wish to consult it." This book has 410 pages and is profusely illustrated. The book is a SIGNED copy from the author, Robert Neslund. Overall this is a FINE copy of this EXTREMELY SCARCE title.
