First Edition. 194 pp. Original cloth. Some sporadic old ink underlining on pp. 13-73 (but none on 31-46, 60-64), a marginal ink note on p. 47. Else Very Good+, without dust jacket. Haldane's piece is 'Are Physical, Biological and Psychological Categories Irreducible?', and Bosanquet's is 'Do Finite Individuals possess a substantive or an adjectival mode of being?', (pp. 75-102; 179-194, reprinted from Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society, n.s. XVIII 1917-1918: 479-506). '[A] symposium . . . took place in London in July 1918 between the philosophers Bernard Bosanquet and Andrew Seth Pringle-Pattison, organised by the Aristotelian Society under the somewhat obscure title 'Do Finite Individuals Possess a Substantive or an Adjectival Mode of Being?' Although the debate between Absolute and Personal Idealism runs throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth-century years, this is the only point at which we find a direct-head-to-head debate between the two schools' (Abstract of Bill Mander, 'Life and Finite Individuality: The Bosanquet / Pringle-Pattison Debate', read at the INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ANGLO-AMERICAN IDEALISM, Olympic Centre for Philosophy and Culture, Pyrgos of Elia, Greece, 20th-25th August 2003).
