Contemporary diced calf boards with gilt borders, recently rebacked with new leather spine with raised bands and gilt stamped leather title label. An important early biography of Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus (Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam, 1466-1469) the Dutch theologian whose new editions of the New Testament are said to have been an important factor in the development of the Reformation. Erasmus was of course also famous for his own works: The Praise of Folly, Handbook of a Christian Knight, On Civility in Children, etc. Some, if not all the plates in this volume were engraved by the renowned English engraver and antiquary George Vertue (1684-1756). Pages 348-349 are repeated in the pagination but text is continuous. Light chafing to boards, corners rubbed with some loss, light angled crease to frontis with some chipping to fore-edge and upper corner (engraving is complete). Plates evenly browned. Outer margins lightly browned. Some light uneven browning, scattered foxing, and tiny penciled notes throughout text. 1/2 inch closed tear to center of page xxvii of Appendix. Despite faults, overall a sound, complete VG copy. Nº de ref. de la librería 33746

Descripción Cambridge: Printed by Corn. Crownfield, 1726, 1726. Octavo (203 x 125 mm). Contemporary brown calf, titles on morocco label to spine, decorative floral frame stamped in blind to covers, edges sprinkled red, marbled endpapers. Bookplate to front pastedown. Boards slightly bowed, light bumps to tips; an excellent copy. Frontispiece and 19 plates. First edition of Knight's biography of the Dutch humanist Desiderius Erasmus, who first visited England in 1498, later spending a number of years Cambridge. This copy with the frontispiece and plates listed in the list of cuts, with the additional plates as called for in Lowndes. Samuel Knight was an English clergyman and antiquary, he served as chaplain to King George II from 1730 to 1746 and as Archdeacon of Berkshire from 1735 to 1746. John Jortin, a subsequent biographer of Erasmus, commented "Dr Knight's work is indeed confused and not over elegant, but it contains many good materials" (Jortin, 617). From the library of 20th-century retail chemist and bibliophile Robert J. Hayhurst, with his bookplate to the front free endpaper and two newspaper clippings about Erasmus's time in England pasted to front free binder's blank. Hayhurst's extensive collection included well-preserved 18th-century bindings. Lowndes 1079. Nº de ref. de la librería 117410
