Quintus Curtius Rufus was a Roman historian, writing probably during the reign of the Emperor Claudius (41 54 AD) or Vespasian (69 79 AD). His only surviving work, Historiae Alexandri Magni, is a biography of Alexander the Great in Latin in ten books, of which the first two are lost, and the remaining eight are incomplete. Alexander III of Macedon (356 BC 323 BC), commonly known as Alexander the Great was a King of the Ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon and a member of the Argead dynasty, a famous ancient Greek royal house. Language: Text in both Latin and French. This is the 2nd French edition and the first with these copper engravings for each chapter and for each frontispiece. Does not have the map as issued, In full period Vellum fine with red gilt morocco spine labels titling Quinte Curce, the French translation for Quintus Curtius. A remarkably crisp tight fresh set with no foxing and some light browning to a few leaves. rare thus. A distinguished provenance with the bookplate ticket signed by the Count de Buri of Verona Italy ca. 1780, and preserved in his family from 1727 until 1975. Note, the Nazi high command used his castle as their head quarters during WW II and burned some of his furniture to heat the castle, while his entire was safe from the war kept in an underground vault.
