Much is known about the literary works and other achievements of noted British author, poet and critic, but far less is known about the environment he grew up in and lived his adult life. Clyde Kilby (text) and Douglas Gilbert (illustrations) set out here to trace the countryside haunts of his youth and the localities that influenced his later life, paticulary Magdalene College and the Kilns, where he spent many years. The differeing terrains, land and sea-scapes and the wild life he observed provided the basic setting for many of his most popular works. Kilby was able to use correspondence not available for earlier writings to flesh out biographical material on CS Lewis.
