Descripción

Much is known about the literary works and other achievements of noted British author, poet and critic, but far less is known about the environment he grew up in and lived his adult life. Clyde Kilby (text) and Douglas Gilbert (illustrations) set out here to trace the countryside haunts of his youth and the localities that influenced his later life, paticulary Magdalene College and the Kilns, where he spent many years. The differeing terrains, land and sea-scapes and the wild life he observed provided the basic setting for many of his most popular works. Kilby was able to use correspondence not available for earlier writings to flesh out biographical material on CS Lewis. First edition of 1973, 192 pages including sorces list, 65 colour illustrations. the majority photos, few art documents etc, many b/w photos, documents, drawings etc. Brown hard covers with dark brown inpressed front/spine titles VG+ with light bump to lower rear corner, ink gift inscription top right FFEP, two seperated lines crossed out lower corner, text block otherwise excellent. From the Inside Flap:

This reissue of a treasured classic offers a beautiful window into the people and places that shaped the life of beloved author, scholar, critic, and apologist C. S. Lewis. In photographs and text (much of it in Lewis's own words), Douglas Gilbert and Clyde S. Kilby introduce us to such memorable friends as J. R. R. Tolkien and transport us to such magical places as the deer park outside Lewis's rooms at Magdalen College, Oxford. We also meet Lewis as a talented and brilliant child in Belfast, captivated by the myths and legends of the North, already writing and illustrating imaginative stories and poems at a young age.

While the book includes an essay tracing Lewis's struggle to find faith and a chronology of his life, it is not a biography but rather a personal introduction, a composite portrait of a fascinating individual and the world in which he lived. Attractively laid out in a fresh new format, this volume will be prized both by those renewing a longtime acquaintance with Lewis and by those encountering him for the first time.

"The constant and ever-growing audience for C. S. Lewis, for both his own work and books about him, will welcome this book. It captures his life and circle and ambience in superb photographs, many in color, of persons and places. . . . This will be basic to Lewis studies and a joy to enthusiasts of his work."

"This graceful marriage of words and photographs is a 'Pilgrim's Progress' of the young atheist poet who became one of the twentieth century's most imaginative theologians."
-- "Time
