The book, explains the essential of IT strategic planning in non-technical language. It will be useful to members of the Board of Directors, Administrators and Managers. Also industry associations, government planners and IT Consultants and Vendors will find the information helpful in working with clients. Most researchers and consultants believe that IT systems that are implemented without a firm grasp of the underlying business reasons for adoption are unlikely to generate value to the organization. This book provides a framework whereby that value can be obtained.

About the Author:

Richard H. Irving

Ric received a Ph.D. in Management Science from the University of Waterloo in 1982 and specializes in analysis and evaluation of the organizational consequences of telecommunication and information systems technologies.

After a 2 year stint at New York University, and a period as director of a research group at the University of Waterloo, he joined the Schulich School of Business at York University in 1984, where he is currently a tenured Associate Professor. Ric recently finished a 3 1/2 year stint as the Associate Dean Academic for the Schulich School of Business at York University. During that period he had operational responsibility for Computing and Student Affairs

He has published 14 articles and two books, "Office Information Systems: Management Issues and Methods and "Don’t Leave IT to the Geeks: Information Systems Strategic Planning for Acute, Chronic and Long-Term care Facilities

Dr. Irving is in demand both nationally and internationally as a speaker and lecturer on such topics as Telecommuting, Computerized Performance Monitoring, Project Management, Computerization of the Workplace, and Strategic Use of Information Technology. He has given public workshops and seminars in Canada and the USA as well as Argentina, Austria, Thailand, and Indonesia

Currently, Ric focuses on IT Planning, IT Implementation and the use of IT in healthcare. Ric has co-authored 4 annual, national studies of Canadian CIO’s views of IT in Canada under the auspices of CIO Magazine and Athabasca University. He writes a column on IT and IT project management for "Canadian Healthcare Technology", has published 4 reports on IT use in healthcare " IT Use in LTC Facilities in Ontario", 1999, "IT Use In Canadian Hospitals" , 2001, "2003 Report on IT Use in Canadian Hospitals" and "I.T. Project Management in Canadian Hospitals" , published in 2004. In addition he has conducted seminars on IT strategic planning for healthcare across Canada and has spoken at numerous conferences on this topic.
