With The Compliments of The Dee Oil Company, Ltd, Liverpool. Leather wallet given as an advertising gift by the Liverpool branch of the The Dee Oil Company, Ltd., who were a substantial private business that specialised in the production of lubricants and wax products. 9 x 11 cm brown leather wallet in mock alligator with gold lettering within. Pockets for cards, money and stamps. The company started in about 1865 as the 'Dee Oil Company', becoming 'The Dee Oil Co. Ltd' in 1888 in response to financial difficulties. An enquiry into the collapse of the company in 1891 revealed a tale of hidden debts, misrepresentation and other skullduggery. Partners in the company were William Clarke Deeley, of Curzon Park, Chester, John Thompson & Charles Humfrey. The company had offices in London, Liverpool, Manchester, Barrow-in-Furness, Hull, Cardiff, Newcastle-on-Tyne, and Paris. The Dee Oil Works were constructed in about 1874 on a site adjacent to St David's Oil Works at Saltney, in the parish of Hawarden in Flintshire, Wales, lying between the London and North Western Railway and the River Dee. The refinery was subsequently extended into the site of those works. In 1882, a candleworks were constructed on a site a quarter of a mile to the east, linked by branch railway. The buildings formed two distinct groups, resembling one another in the appearance of the round-backed, red-painted iron buildings. When first constructed, the Dee Oil Works may have refined some crude oil from North Wales, however production was soon based on imported American petroleum. In 1888, when the Dee Oil Co. Ltd was promoted, the works were described as one of the largest lubricating oil works in Britain. Images show several benches of stills at the oil works site, while wax refining, candle producture and the manufacture of soaps and ointments were based on the candle works sites. Stitching coming undone in a couple of places and one end of string detached. Otherwise just general wear. N° de ref. del artículo 000956
