Sinopsis: Each book presents a major world language. It examines where the language is spoken, who speaks it, what alphabet the language is written in, and other interesting facts, including introductions on how to say key phrases in the language. A pronunciation guide explains how to pronounce the foreign-language words.

About the Author: Daniel Nunn has written numerous books for young readers on a variety of topics, specializing in early years and elementary education. Like Eddie the Elephant, he enjoys playing hide and seek with his two young children. His favorite hiding place is behind the curtains in the living room!

Jilly Hunt has over 15 years experience of educational publishing. Formerly an editor for Pearson, Jilly is now a freelance children's writer and editor. She has written more than 15 non-fiction books for children and young adults. She graduated from Oxford Brookes University with BA Honours in Publishing and History of Art. She now lives in Oxfordshire with her husband two small children.

Catherine Chambers was born in Adelaide, Australia, and was brought up in the UK. She has written about 120 books for children and young adults on all kinds of subjects, including history, biographies, science and the arts.

Charlotte Guillain worked as a bookseller, an English teacher and an editor before becoming an author. She has written more than 100 books, both fiction and non-fiction. She always wanted to be a writer and her top tip is to read as much as you can.

Follow the extraordinary journey of the most widely spoken language in the world, discover its many influences and learn about how it has evolved. From the Anglo-Saxons in the fifth century to the Normans in the eleventh, and on to present-day America, many diverse elements and languages have shaped modern-day English.Divided chronologically, this fascinating guide follows the language from Latin - and earlier - influences, through Old and Middle English to Early Modern and, finally, today s Late Modern English. The Story of English also explores, among much else, the history of the printing press, the works of Chaucer, the evolution of the dictionary, the use of slang in speech and the coming of electronic messaging.
