This monumental work is the first detailed history in English of western European botany and botanists from antiquity to the eighteenth century. Greene, Edward Lee. Landmarks Of Botanical History; A Study Of Certain Epochs In The Development Of The Science Of Botany. Part I was originally published in 1909 and before this was long out of print. The text of Part II is based on a typescript, now in the Hunt Institute, prepared at the Smithsonian in 1936 from a handwritten manuscript found among Greene's effects at the time of his death in 1915. Part II is published here for the first time. The main body of the 2 volumes is concerned with Greene's identification and discussion of the landmarks of botany. Part 1 deals with an introduction to the philosophy of botanical history, part 2 discusses the Italian forefathers of the 15th century, appendixes outline pre-Grecian, medieval, and 17th-century botany. These volumes will be of interest to historians, taxonomists, and botanists.
