Descripción

Red cloth. 8vo. 243pp. Frontispiece. Bookplate. The dedication copy of this work, inscribed to Eugene Plunkett on the flyleaf. The inscription consists of a 20-line poem in the author's hand about the creation of the book and Plunkett's part in it. A novel about a crippled and poor Englishman who dreams of America and takes his last voyage there. Albert Kinross (1870-1929) was an English journalist, magazine editor and novelist. He was London correspondent for The Boston Transcript and associate editor of The Outlook. He later served as drama critic for the Morning Post and art critic for The Academy. In 1905-06 he was a special correspondent in the Russo-Japanese War and subsequent Russian uprising and later in Greece. In 1907 he gave up journalism and began writing novels and stories. On the outbreak of World War I he joined the British army and served for five years in France, Greece, Egypt and Palestine, retiring with the rank of captain. He was editor of The Balkan News in 1916 and deputy military editor of The Palestine News in 1918. Our research has turned up little about the book's dedicatee other than that he was a friend of H.G. Wells, Joseph Conrad and other writers of the period and a book collector in California. This is a worn copy with some fading and spotting to the covers. The spine is faded with some fraying to the tips and a small piece missing from the upper spine. The text is good with some soiling and wear. The endsheets and inscription page have some foxing and there is a small chip missing from the front pastedown. N° de ref. de la librería 8065
