Descripción:

** 1ST AMERICAN EDITION ** 1ST STATE ** GOOD HARDCOVER ** FAIR DUSTJACKET ** EX-LIBRARY ** First publication in U.S. of "The Power and the Glory". With 301 pages. Scarce 1st state, with pages 165 and 256 transposed. Page 165 here begins with: "A voice said" and page 256 begins: "A voice near his foot said". Title page dated 1940, copyright page reads "First Published in March 1940". NOTE: EX-LIBRARY, please expect usual library markings. This copy from a retail rental library, not a public library, so fewer library markings. Neither book or dustjacket have library markings to the exteriors. The only library markings to the book are 2 rubber stamps on the blank front pastedown. The top and bottom edges of the dustjacket are trimmed about a quarter inch to fit the clear plastic library cover (most of the plastic has been removed), but this does not affect the jacket lettering or graphics. Book and jacket are otherwise complete and intact. Jacket NOT price-clipped ($2.50). The jacket flaps are glued to the book, but are otherwise undamaged. Patience and the proper solvent might set them free. Book bound in yellow cloth-covered boards with embossed lettering on front and spine (stylized "G" on front). The book is clean and stain-free, square and straight, still firm in its binding, no pages loose, missing or torn, hinges sound and undamaged, corner tips show a touch of wear but are unbumped. Aside from the previously noted rubber stamps, there is no writing, underlining or highlighting in the book, 3 or 4 pages do show scattered spots or smudges of light soil or staining, but all text crisp and very legible. Though edge-trimmed, the jacket is otherwise complete and intact, no tears, no chips, no pieces missing. The jacket itself appears clean, unmarked and stain-free, perhaps a tad darkened from age. Buy with confidence, professional booksellers for 35 years, selling online since 1995. N° de ref. de la librería

Descripción Viking Press, New York, 1940. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine+. First Edition. First printing ("First Published in March 1940" on copyright page), second state (correctly paginated, but pp. 165-6 and 255-256 are cancels, both stating "Chapter Three"; no author's note, dedication unaltered). 8vo: {8},301,[1]pp. Publisher's yellow cloth, spine and upper cover stamped in black, top edge stained teal; illustrated dust jacket priced $2.50. A spectacular copy, tight, square, and unmarked (probably unread), with undiminished top stain, in a bright, Near Fine or better (back panel slightly dust soiled) very lightly restored jacket, affecting neither lettering nor design. Wobbe A16b. Miller 20b. Burgess 99, p. 28. Time 100. Published the same year, in London, as The Power and the Glory. "Nowhere in his may novels has Greene better conveyed the torrid decay of tropical townships, where the carious ruin are metaphors for a world without God. . . . The book comes early in the list of those novels of Greene (most of them) which deal specifically with the place of the Catholic in a secular world . . . it is distinguished and serious art even when we have ceased to be affected by its theology." (Burgess 99). N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Nº de ref. de la librería BB1649
