Descripción:

FIRST EDITION THUS. 8vo., pp. 7-109 plus appendix I and II, bibliography and index. Two sketch maps of the tribal territories of Persia (Iran) and the area in Southern Persia over which the Kashkai migrate. Thirty-two b/w photographic illustrations all by the author. Original ivory cloth sound/VG. Interior clean/VG. The free endpapers are a little foxed where the dust jacket has not covered the pasted down endpaper. Interesting dust jacket with a colour plate showing the loading of camels for migration. Marie Therese Ullens de Schooten was plainly captivated by the Kashkai tribe of Southern Persia and the wild and desolate country over which they moved their flocks from winter to summer pastures. She conveys this perfectly in her book covering the times she spent with the tribe in the early 1950's, a time when all the nomadic tribes of Persia had begun to recover from the enforced settlements they were subjected to by Riza Shah Pahlevi, who abdicated in 1941. The Kashkai were the most famous of these nomadic tribes who came to Persia in the 13th century and whose name is thought to come from the Turkish meaning of a horse with a white star on its forehead. Ullens de Schooten met the tribe's then chief and judge, Nasser Khan, and was invited by him to film the Kashkai in their Spring encampment. Her descriptions of this tribal and nomadic life is engrossing and captivating and only the knowledge that it probably no longer exists stops the reader from wanting to see this romantic world personally. Descripción de la librería: We specialise in travel, adventure and exploration books published between about 1900 and 1960, loosely referred to as post-imperialist travel writing. Although most books are the first-hand experiences of their authors, we have included books of general interest about a particular area or incident and autobiographies and biographies by and of famous travellers or adventurers. You will also find some books we consider of particular merit outside our somewhat arbitrary date range. Mark Culme-Seymour Proprietor
