Folio 13" - 23" tall; Loidis and Elmete; or, an Attempt To Illustrate the Districts Described in Those Words by Bede; and Supposed To Embrace the Lower Portions of Aredale and Wharfdale, together with the Entire Vale of Calder, in the County of York, England. 404 pages plus 2 pages of directions to the binder and plates. In one volume. Width: 11.5" Height: 17.5". Bound in full contemporary leather with raised bands and stamped gilt lettering to spine panels. Light wear, with scuffing and light soiling to covers. Spine labels display chipping and narrow cracking. Binding is firm and text solid, with reinforced hinges. Marbled endpapers and edges. Antique armorial bookplate appears on front pastedown; provenance- Charles Stewart Hardy. Very occasional (light) foxing. This lavishly illustrated work contains an engraved frontispiece portrait of the author, color title vignette, as well as many additional plates, textual illustrations and decorative initial letters. Descripción Hardcover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. Presumed original grey cardboard/paper boards with re-backed blue cloth spine including gilt titles within black frame on the spine. The boards show some moderate edge wear but generally in good condition. Loidis and Elmete includes frontispiece of Whitaker, 404 pages, an appendix of 88 pages, 53 portraits and plates (2 in colour), 21 illustrations in the text and 17 pedigrees. Ducatus Leodiensis has frontispiece of Thoresby with 10 plates, 3 text illustrations and 13 pedigrees, 261 pages and Musaeum Thoresbyanum (catalogue of the antiquities). Descripción Hardback. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: No DW. 1st Thus. Two volumes. Bound in matching half light brown leather over patterned paper covered boards. New plain endpapers. A modern (?1970s) amateur binding but presenting quite well. Some damage to joint betwen frontispiece and title page in "Ducatus" volume. Some spotting etc to plates but generally very good very sound texts. Previous owner assured collation was correct but ONLY offered for sale AS IS. WITH INSPECTION RECOMMENDED.
