Descripción

New York W.W. Norton & Company 1979., hard bound in dust jacket, Fine/VG condition, 8 1/2 x 11 1/4, ( dj has several small closed tears ),and is price clipped ), 253 pages. massively illustrated. The Civil War was the first railroad war, and this is the story, in text and pictures, of that war and of the efforts by both sides to destroy the enemy's trains and tracks while protecting its own. To keep military control over these lines, the federal government formed the United States Military Railroads, which gave military priority over all civilian transportation, passenger or freight.Since the original companies could not keep up with the incredible destruction visited on them, the federal government also formed the Military Railroad Construction Corps, under the direction of an engineering genius, Brigadier General Herman Haupt, whose reconstruction feats of bridge building and train operation under battle conditions brought about the Confederate comment that the Yankees could rebuild the tracks and bridges faster than they could burn them down.More than two hundred photographs, maps, on-the-spot drawings, and a lively, informative text combine to provide a fascinating insight into the little-known, decisive role the American steam locomotive and the U.S. Military Railroads played in the Civil War.
