FIRST EDITION. 8vo., pp. xi, 15-525 plus index. One hundred and sixty-five b/w illustrations including maps. Original cream cloth sound/GOOD. Loose between front endpapers. Interior clean/VG. Inspired by the great explorers of his day, Sven Hedin as a twelve-year old child dreamt of a life following their footsteps to the far corners of the earth. His great ambition was to explore the Arctic, but fate decreed that his life's work would be the exploration of Central Asia. In 1885 at the age of twenty he travelled in the Caucasus, Persia (Iran) and Mesopotamia and these early travels set him in his now famous course of excursions. In 1891 he visited northern Persia and Russian Turkestan and crossed Asia to Peking by way of the Urals, the Pamir range and Lake Lop in western China between 1893 ad 1898. He explored the Gobi desert from 1899 to 1902 and was the first to explore the trans-Himalayan range of Tibet and to prepare a detailed map of the country in 1905-1908. With the most important of his journeys over the book ends but Sven Hedin went on to play an important role in subsequent archaeological expeditions. This is a classic work covering one of the most fascinating areas of the world at a time when it was almost unknown in the West. N° de ref. de la librería 10491

Descripción de la librería: We specialise in travel, adventure and exploration books published between about 1900 and 1960, loosely referred to as post-imperialist travel writing. Although most books are the first-hand experiences of their authors, we have included books of general interest about a particular area or incident and autobiographies and biographies by and of famous travellers or adventurers. You will also find some books we consider of particular merit outside our somewhat arbitrary date range. Mark Culme-Seymour Proprietor
