Descripción
Octavo. [2], xvi, 405; [2], iv, 473 pp., errata, plate, map. Second and best edition, revised and enlarged. In contemporary bindings, backed in leather with corners and patterned cloth over boards; spine with gilt title and decoration. Rubbing to the spine with some wear at the spine ends; fraying to the leather at the corners; offsetting from the map and plate as usual; scant and scattered spotting and soiling to the contents, but all in all a presentable, solid set, internally fairly clean containing both plates (one folding) of ancient indigenous fortifications, and tipped in at the rear of Volume II, a slip containing errata for both volumes as well as the "Directions to the Binder." A series of letters chronicling a 16-month journey through much of the United States and Canada from October 1819 to June 1820. Originally published without Hodgson's permission as Remarks during a Journey through North America (New York, 1823), this second revised and enlarged edition is, more complete, better organized and according to Clark, generally better reading. Field notes, "Mr. Hodgson's account of his visit to the Creek and Choctaw Indians, and the Appendix, contain interesting particulars relating to the aborigines and their antiquities" Field 705. Pilling (1827) also points out the "translation of part of the 19th Psalm into the Muh-he-con-nuk language, done at the Cornwall School, under the superintendence of the Rev. John Serjeant, Missionary, in double columns, Indian and English" is not present in the New York edition. A nice copy of the best edition of a notable collection of letters. Clark II, 208; Howes H-560 "aa"; Pilling 1827; Sabin 32357. N° de ref. del artículo 6340
