Descripción:

Lightly rubbed at head of spine, Former owner's name and address on ffep (small), else clean, tight, very nice copy of the scarce First Edition of this esoteric novel. Thomas Sawyer Spivey was born in 1856 at Shawneetown, Illinois. He later attended college at the Enfield College that his grandfather, also named Thomas Sawyer Spivey, had founded years before and where one of his classmates was William Jennings Bryan. In an eight page article 'Mark Twain in Shawneetown, Illinois, Home of Tom Sawyer and Colonel Sellers' by James Bruce Anderson of Simpson College the author makes a good case for Shawneetown (rather than Hannibal, MO) as the model for St. Petersburg in the novel Tom Sawyer. Anderson states that as a boy young Tom Sawyer Spivey lived with his grandmother, Lucy Street, and earlier spent much of his childhood on the farm of his uncle Thomas Jefferson Spivey and Aunt Sallie (Smyth). It was at the Riverside Hotel in Shawneetown, that a steamboat pilot, Samuel Clements (Mark Twain), became acquainted with an interesting youngster named Thomas Sawyer Spivey. In the preface to Tom Sawyer, Twain says "[Tom] is a combination of the characteristics of three boys whom I knew." Thomas Sawyer Spivey asserted the he was one of these three boys, the others being Larry Green and Hayes McCallan. Thomas Sawyer Spivey became a prolific writer during his tenure as president of the Victor Safe and Lock Co. Among the books he authored are: The Last of the Gnostic Masters: A Novel; The Awakening of the Sixth Sense; Visible Evolution; The Seven Sons of Ballyhack; Jane and I; The Hoosier Widow; Dr. Paul McKim; Lavius Egyptus, or The Unveiling of The Pythagorean Senate; Lavius Egyptus: Lectures in the Pythagorean Senate in the Temple of the Oracle of Dodona [second in series]; The Caverns of Crail; and many others. After the sale of the Victor Safe and Lock Company, Thomas Sawyer Spivey and his wife Dorothy Kleine relocated to Beverly Hills, California, where they purchased a home and Tom wrote several more books, many of an esoteric nature. After a number of years, they retired to Shawneetown and purchased the old Pool farm overlooking Shawneetown. Spivey built himself a fireproof library where he enjoyed the many interesting and valuable books he had collected throughout his life, which ended in 1938. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings. N° de ref. de la librería
