Designated on the colophon leaf: "Exemplaire reserve a" [completed in Hervieu's ink holograph]: "Raoul Dufy" and signed by Louise Hervieu. Louise Hervieu (1878-1954), French author, artist and draughtswoman, studied art in Paris, and began to paint about 1905. She exhibited at the Salon des Independants, and had an one-woman show at the Galerie Eugene Blot, in Paris, in 1910. She began working with pastels and charcoal, concentrating on still lifes, and was influenced by Bonnard, Vuillard and Felix Vallotton. Her work included book illustration, but a childhood illness led to diminished vision, and she began to write, resulting in her work, L'Ame du Cirque, illustrated by numerous artists. Front cover has short closed tear at lower edge, rear cover has short bumped tear at top edge, else a near fine, bright copy; housed in publisher's folding chemise (decorated paper-covered boards). The chemise has moderate wear on spine, tips of corners are lightly bumped, else very good; it has protected the book quite well. . First edition, "sur Madagascar" issue, limited to 40 "hors commerce" copies, reserved for the author and the artists [this copy reserved for Raoul Dufy], signed by Louise Hervieu.
