Kosmos. Entwurf einer physischen Weltbeschreibung HUMBOLDT, ALEXANDER VON Stuttgart and Tübingen: J.G. Cotta (Atlas: Krais & Hoffmann), 1845-1862. First Edition. 5 vols. in 6 + Atlas. FIRST EDITION. 8 vo and oblong folio. Contemp. half lea. and marbled boards with spine labels renewed, the atlas in recent closely matching binding with orig. large lea. label on cover preserved.Text: approx. 3,000 pp. One folding table in vol.3. Atlas: (2), 136 pp. + 42 lithographed (color printed and partially hand-colored) mostly thematic maps. Occasional minor spotty foxing, minor browning to text of atlas; a very good, crisp set. "Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) produced in his 'Cosmos' one of the last really comprehensive physical surveys ever to be attempted. .In his own words it was meant 'to represent in one work the whole material world, everything we know today of the phenomena in the celestial spaces and of life on earth, from nebulae to the geography of mosses on granite rocks.' .Although 'Kosmos' is by no means a book of popular science, it had a great success. The first edition of volume I was sold out within two months; it was immediately translated into most European languages; and by 1852, eighty thousand copies had been sold." (PMM 320). ".Humboldt died before completing the fifth volume. The index was prepared according to his specifications and he credited each contemporary to whom he felt indebted. The work cites over 9,000 sources and is thus an important reference for the history of science." (D.S.B.). Geology Emerging 1141. Milestones of Science 106. N° de ref. de la librería 000600
