PUBLISHER: Reykjavík : E.P. Briem, 1935. DESCRIPTION: 224 p. : ill. ; 19 cm. VG+ to Near Fine in pictorial paper over boards and red cloth backstrip. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY AUTHOR, THUS: "Dr. og Mrs. K. J. Austmann, með vináttu kveðju og þakklotis frá Guðrun og Magnúsi" Dr. Austmann was a Winnipeg Opthamologiest practicing as late as 1941. Thus, association copy. This book tells the story of an Icelandic-Canadian child growing up in Canada. The author was one of the greatest prose writers of the Icelandic-Canadian Community, and "one of those few Western Icelandic writers who gained popularity on both sides of the Atlantic" (Neijmann, The Icelandic Voice, , p. 146). He emigrated from Iceland to Nova Scotia at age nine. He became a school teacher in western Canada in 1889. After his retirement, he lived at Elfros, Saskatchewan (Kirkconnell, Canadian overtones). His social criticisms were based clearly on the immigrant experience, according to Neijmann. She states also that, "the more important aspect of [the author's] fictional tales . . . is that he creates a folklore, a body of legends for the West Icelanders . . .". In his books, the heroes are usually courageous young Icelanders proving their moral mettle in various parts of the western world. Referenced in Hjartar, p. 61. Scarce.
