KGB. nazism.~ A Journey Into Madnessis the first fully detailed investigation of mind control, medical torture, and other frightening exploitations of the human psyche and body by doctors concerned primarily with serving selfish goals that were placed above all ethics, morals, or human feeling . goals that were sanctioned and supported by the Central Intelligence Agency of tbe United States. During the past thirty years, a chilling picture has emerged of the way the power and knowledge of doctors~from South Africa to South America, from Moscow to Beirut~has been bought and harnessed by governments and terrorists for their own cruel purposes. In Journey into Madness, author and journalist Gordon Thomas brings to light the dark alliance between politics, medicine, and terrorism. This alliance still flourishes today as our hostages await freedom~and as some, such as ex~CIA operative William Buckley, are brutallv murdered. Ironically; it was through Buckley himself that Gordon Thomas first learned of the CIA's long history of complicity in the sponsoring of torture and medical abuse. The journey into madness goes back to the darkest days of the Cold War and two powerful spvmasters~Allen Dulles and William Casey; both in their time directors of the CIA, and both aware of the effectiveness of mind control as a means to political ends. Unable under US law to experiment in America, Dulles funded a terrifying and dangerous program of medical abuse under the aegis of Dr. Donald Ewen Cameron at the Allan Memorial Institute in Montreal, Canada. There, Cameron took ordinary citizens, hospitalized for mental illness, and subjected them to incredible experiments in brainwashing and radical surgery. An internationaHy eminent psychiatrist of the forties and fifties, Cameron was said in a CIA report to have "no ethical problems when it comes to national security." The methods he developed included "depatterning," the destruction of the victim's personality by repeated shock treatments up to forty times the intensity considered safe, massive doses of drugs, including LSD; long periods of drug~induced sleep, sometimes lasting as long as ninety days; and a mind~control technique called psychic driving. His ultrasecret work destroyed the minds, bodies, and lives of his victims, and deepened the unthinkable partnership between medicine and espionage, between doctors and spies. Journey into Madness also traces Cameron's evil descendants, medical practitioners sworn to heal who are inflicting great suffering. Today, techniques similar to Cameron's are being brought to bear in Beirut, where one of the most powerful men in the city is a doctor who carries a medical bag of horrors as he moves from safe house to safe house "tending" his victims, many of them Americans held hostage by the fanatical terrorists of the Muslim fundamentalist Hizballah. Thoroughly researched and documented, based on letters, trial documents, case records, and extensive interviews with surviving victims and several intelligence operatives including the late CIA chief William Casey [110117].
