Frontcover with a large coloured illustration featuring an Indonesian landscape with covertitle in bold white type at tail.247pp. Many captioned monochrome illustrations in text and full-page after original photographs, featuring portraits and group-portraits, incl. orphans in the care of Johannes van der Steur, some facsims. after archivalia, 2 full-page plans with legenda featuring the Magelang Orphanage "Oranje Nassau" and the japanese internmentcamp "Tjimahi", Java, long poem with as title "Java" by Johannes van der Steur, bookreview by Inge Dümpel, Chief editor of NINES, on lower outer cover, table of contents. Copy inscribed by author on ti.-p. The very first dutch language biography elling the story of Johannes van der Steur 1865-1945, a dutch protestant (conservative) missionary minister to the Dutch East Indies, who is still better known as "Pa" (=Dad) Van der Steur or "the father of 7000 children". Van der Steur was one of the first, if not the first, taking care of Indonesian-dutch orphans. Van der Steur established his forst orphanage in the "Oranje-Nassau" infirmary at Magelang, Java, with many to follow. He died shortly after his release from the Japanese concentrationcamp Tjimahi, Java, but his name is still well-known and respected in modern Indonesia. Very fine copy.
