Previous owner's name is written, in ink, on front free endpapers of Volumes I, IV, V and VI; pages are otherwise clean and unmarked. Dust jackets are of plain black paper, in good condition. Holes have been somewhat irregularly cut in spines of jackets in order to display the title of each volume. Spines are sunned; chipping to edges and corners. Some scuffing to sides of jackets. Slipcases are of black paper over boards, with a white paper label with black lettering on one side, in good condition. Some wear to edges and corners; some scuffing to sides. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs and reproductions of artworks. Illustrations for Volumes I and II are found in Volume III; illustrations for other volumes are found in an unpaginated section following their respective indices. Signed note from the author, on Yale University letterhead, is stapled to a relevant clipping from Judaism: A Quarterly Review, and tucked inside the front cover of Volume I; clipping and note are wrinkled. American religious scholar Erwin Goodenough writes about the religious iconography of Hellenistic Judaism. This is an oversized (and overweight) book.
