Año de publicación: 1764
Edición: 1st Edition
2 vols., 12mo., Second Edition, on laid paper, with fine engraved title-vignettes; eighteenth century tree calf, sides with double frame border in gilt, backs with five raised bands, second compartments with red leather labels ruled and lettered in gilt, all other compartments elaborately ruled and tooled in gilt to a floral design, gilt edges, marbled endpapers, boards moderately age-worn and scuffed, corners bruised, labels chipped with minor loss (but all gilt legible), backstrip tooling mildly worn, joints rubbed, hinges tender (one cracked but just holding), else a clean crisp copy in wholly unrestored period binding. With the half-titles which are sometimes absent. The title-vignettes are by A. Walker. Hoole's translation, the first in English, was first printed for the author in the previous year. The dedication 'To the Queen' was written by Johnson who subscribed for a copy of the first edition. 'Mr. Samuel Johnson, whose judgement I am happy in being authorised to make use of on this occasion, has given me leave to publish it, as his opinion, that a modern translation of the Jerusalem Delivered is a work that may very justly merit the attention of the English reader' (preface p.xiv).
