Japanese Temples: Sculpture, Paintings, Gardens, and Architecture

This is an excellent example of the book as both art and scholarship. The scholar of the volume, J. Edward Kidder, Jr. was an academician and professor at International Christian University in Mitaka, Japan for 37 years. Kidder is widely recognized for his publications and direction of many archeological digs throughout Japan. In 1992, the Emperor of Japan awarded Kidder the "Imperial Order of the Sacred Treasure" for his contribution to Japanese culture. In this single volume Kidder provides an extensive analysis of the Japanese Temple and all its components while black-and-white photographs fill the pages with yet another art form. The artist/photographers for the book were Tatsuzo Sato, Shihachi Fujimoto, Yoshio Watanabe, Ken Domon, Yasukichi Irie, and Yukio Futagawa. 554 pages. Larger format book.
