Descripción Tokyo: Hitachi, 1963, 1963. Quarto. Original dark blue textured boards, spine and front cover lettered in silver, black endpapers. Issued without dust jacket. Binding a little shaken, spine sunned, wear to head and tail of spine and corners. Illustrated throughout in gravure after photographs by Smith. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy from the authors, inscribed on the title page: "Dear Harvey, here then, with all its mistakes (and its errors) - - on your 100th anniversary, Gene Smith [and] Carole Thomas". An excellent association copy: Harvey Zucker was the owner of the legendary bookshop The Photographers Place in SoHo, New York. A superb collection of images - stark at times, harsh even but never prurient in the way so many Japanese photographic publications seem to be. Nº de ref. de la librería 104479

Descripción 1963. First Edition. SMITH, W. Eugene. Japan a Chapter of Image. (Tokyo: Toppan Printing Co., 1963). Large quarto, original blue paper boards. $3000.First edition of this photographic essay on Japan’s industrialization, inscribed by W. Eugene Smith on the title page: "To Jim, Well, here this one is—all crept over with errors and faults, and a few passable things, I’m learning.—Gene."From 1961-1962, W. Eugene Smith worked for Hitachi Corporation in Japan, ostensibly to document the company’s activities. Instead, Smith created this photo essay that emphasizes the impact of rapid industrialization on Japanese laborers. This was Smith’s first exposure to the theme that he would build upon 10 years later in his poignant work about mercury poisoning in Minamata, Japan. In this essay, Smith includes for the first time the phrase that would later become closely identified with his work and artistic philosophy, and was chosen as the title of the famous 1970 retrospective of his photographs: "Let truth be the prejudice." Only very slight sunning and minor wear to extremities of boards, small tape repair to front board. Photographs lovely and fine. An extremely good copy. Signed. Nº de ref. de la librería 45272

Descripción 1963. Tokyo: Hitachi Ltd. (First edition). Large quarto. Gilt tilted blue Japanese style paper covered boards. Fine in fine matching fitted gilt titled original clamshell box with Japanese style "ivory" closures. A spectacular copy of this scarce and somewhat fragile W. Eugene Smith profusely illustrated photo essay on Japan and it's citizens which was commissioned by the Hitachi Corporation of Tokyo. Printed in gravure and containing many W. Eugene Smith photographs unpublished anywhere else. Smih has noted on the colophon page: "This book, indirectly, is dedicated to Japan through the whole of its venture with the extremes of experience counting finally as cherished-as are those friendships which are my reward". From what we have read and heard through word of mouth over the years from those who were known to the photographer, Smith was commissioned in 1963 with a stipend of the equivlent of $100,000 by Hitachi Ltd. to document Japan and the company according to the corporations desired ideologies. Smith evidently set off to document the same, while blowing through the money, according to his own, private and usually both loving and critical ideologies. Easily the best copy we have ever seen of this book, which when available alone is not in this unflawed condition and no doubt has survived in this condition due to the fact that it has been well preserved in the ultra-rare, virtually unknown original matching fitted box, which is even more rare in this spectacular condition. We have seen only one other example of the box which was virtually destroyed and in poor condition and prior to seeing it were unaware that this title was issued with a box. Overall an amazing copy of what is easily the scarcest of W. Eugene Smith books. Rare!. Nº de ref. de la librería 10140 WM
