An excellent copy in the lightly rubbed and faintly marked jacket with tape repairs to spine ends. Illustrations from photos throughout. First edition, first impression; US issue (with "The British Book Centre, Inc., New York" ticket on the title page). This is the copy, with his illustrated bookplate and ownership signature, of Vincent Starrett (1886–1974), Chicago reporter, collector, bibliographer and author of detective fiction, particularly Sherlock Holmes. Contains a number of previously unpublished letters (with portions reproduced in holograph facsimile) and quotes by Joyce [S&C B32] "This book by an Irish writer deals with Joyce's boyhood and the important years before his exile in 1904." (from the dust jacket). One corner is moderately bumped (causing creasing to text at tip of one corner), rear endpapers are foxed, else a very good copy in worn dust jacket; pictorial jacket has shallow chipping at tips of spine, moderate wear to extremities, with few short tears and thin chips to both panels, else very good.
