Editorial: Franciscan Herald Press

The questions of prophecy and the prophet have been with the Church for some years now. Who is a prophet? How does one distinguish between the true and the false prophet? In this booklet Dr. Walter Wifall does not give us direct answers to our contemporary problems with prophecy and the prophet. Rather he performs the task of a well-informed and perceptive guide as he leads us back to the source of the prophetic element in our Judeo-Christian tradition. As a guide to that source, he offers us many insights for reflection about our contemporary faith stance on prophecy and the prophet. His first six chapters describe the history, nature, and interpretation of Israel's prophecy and force the reader to examine his preconceptions about the nature of prophecy and the prophet. In Chapter 7 he invites his reader to turn to his Bible as he explains the comforting and challenging messages of the prophets Amos, Hosea, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Second Isaiah. Discussion Questions, which prompt the readers to further pondering of contemporary implications, conclude the volume. The author received his Ph.D. in Ancient Near Eastern Studies from Johns Hopkins University.
