Finely bound in c.1900 brown full pebble-grained morocco, spines gilt in compartments, sides bordered by double gilt rules, turn-ins florally gilt-rolled, all edges gilt. Ownership inscription. Extremities lightly rubbed, a few faint spots to early and late leaves. Excellent condition. Engraved frontispiece, illustrated title page, folding map, and six engraved illustrations on seven plates (one a two-plate panorama). First Montgomery-translated edition, handsomely bound, telling the history of the proto-Protestant Christian sect the Waldensians, started in Lyons in around 1170, and surviving centuries of persecution in the Swiss Valley of the Vaudois. William Hazlitt's perhaps more sensationalist translation was published as "A History of the Persecutions of the Waldenses" by Ingram, Cook & Co. in 1852. N° de ref. de la librería 80690
