Sinopsis:

Shaffrey, Patrick The Irish Town. An approach to survival. Dublin, The O'Brien Press, 1975. 19,5 cm x 26 cm. 192 pages. Illustrated throughout. Original Hardcover with original, illustrated dustjacket in protective Mylar. Flat-signed by author on title page. Pre-owner's name inscription on half-title. Corners slightly worn, otherwise in very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Includes for example the following chapters: The Nature of Irish Towns / The Shape of Towns / Redevelopment - the problem of Infill / Amenity Areas / The Fabric of Towns / A Policy for Conservation / Conservation - Does It Pay? / A Trail for Kilkenny etc. For a hundred years the towns and villages of Ireland have slept, largely unchanged, and surrounded by unspoilt countryside. Often there was a shortage of money, but hand in hand with this we see evidence of good taste and a feeling for scale, colour and style. We will also find to-day evidence of craftsmanship at its best, in stone brick and plaster, and also local building traditions that give Irish towns that special flavour. Suddenly progress, change, development and expansion are the fashion, and for the next 25 years it is projected that the towns of Ireland will be subjected to more change than in the last 300. Change can be good and bad. It is possible that the character and quality of our towns and villages could be destroyed forever, and replaced by mediocre, and indeed vulgar, development. The result could be a 'uniform town' for the whole island, Cookstown could appear the same as Clifden and Belfast the same as Bantry. This is in fact happening right now, and unless this generation shows more concern, and takes action, it will soon be too late to do anything. This book points the way to the future, and by using over 400 illustration (photos, sketches and plans) demonstrates that change and expansion can be accommodated, without destroying all that is ..
