Descripción:

Classicist Charles Beye's copy of the First Edition, with his ink name stamp. lxii, 131 pp. Original cloth. Very Good. There are, of course, many English translations of the Ion, including several recent ones, and Verrall's has long been out of print, perhaps suggesting that it has, indeed, been superceded. (I cannot attest to its influence in any way on later translations, including that of Hilda Doolittle, 1937, which tends to be treated as more collectible than Verrall's.) But at least Arthur Woollgar Verrall (1851-1912) may not have been quite the sexist that the Greeks he studied often were: 'A. W. Verrall, the great classical scholar, once said that one of the chief diseases of which ancient civilization died was a low view of women' (William Barclay, The Letters to the Galatians and Ephesians, 1958, p. 199).
