Folio (16 7/8 x 11 inches). Engraved title-page. 2 fine double-page and folding world maps, including one double-hemisphere, 3 double-page and folding maps of the continents, double-page map with two plates of Amerique Septentrionale and Meridional, 18 engraved maps of hemispheres, including 2 with volvelles, and 5 plates, including one with 2 volvelles, all with original hand-colour in outline (some light waterstaining to plates at end). Contemporary speckled calf with red morroco lettering piece (rebacked preserving the original spine, a bit rubbed). Provenance: with the 19th-century ownership inscription of Abbe [Anatole?} Toussaint, cure de Montaure (Eure) (1863-1946), botanist, on the verso of the front free endpaper. A beautiful and EXCEPTIONALLY RARE atlas, no other copies of this date are known, although one dated 1719 and with 39 maps is in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Editions of the "Introduction" are known from as early as 1681, published under Guillaume Sanson's name, but vary in content. Guillaume was the son of celebrated French cartographer Nicholas Sanson-d'Abbeville (1600-1667), and Pierre Moullart was Nicholas's grandson who inherited the Sanson empire, and the position of Royal Cartographer, on his uncle's death. The extra-ordinary maps include some unusual hemispheres: concave views from the center of the earth outward; views using the Paris horizon as a reference point; and counterproofs. This technical introduction to cartography also shows calculation techniques with paper instruments using volvelles.
