Editions of the "Introduction" are known from as early as 1681, published under Guillaume Sanson's name, but vary in content. Guillaume was the son of celebrated French cartographer Nicholas Sanson-d'Abbeville (1600-1667), and Pierre Moullart was Nicholas's grandson who inherited the Sanson empire, and the position of Royal Cartographer, on his uncle's death. The extra-ordinary maps include some unusual hemispheres: concave views from the center of the earth outward; views using the Paris horizon as a reference point; and counterproofs. This technical introduction to cartography also shows calculation techniques with paper instruments using volvelles.
