Sinopsis: Most of the links in the interstate highway system of the United States were built in the 1960s and 1970s. The majority of students in our introductory and advanced geography courses today cannot remember life before the interstate. The industrial park, the regional shopping mall, and the interchange economic zone with its motel, fast food, and gas station franchises are familiar landscapes to children who have grown up outside of central cities, places where interstate construction sometimes destroyed neighborhoods and livelihoods. This monograph provides us with a rest stop where we can pause to review the trip so far. This monograph offers an overview of the development of the HIS and research from the last several decades on the impact of the system regionally and locally.
