[6], v, [1], 92pp. With two folding hand-coloured plates. Contemporary gilt-tooled red straight-grain morocco, A.E.G. Lightly rubbed and marked, slight surface loss to lower board. Marbled endpapers, internally clean and crisp. The fourth known copy of a provincially published set of instructions for the manoeuvring of cavalry in combat by William Penny, Sergeant major of the 20th Regiment of Light Dragoons. Intended for the use of volunteer cavalry regiments, the work is dedicated to Prime Minister Henry Addington (1757-1844), then Captain Commandant of the Woodley Corps, Berkshire. When Addington stood in the House of Commons to announce the resumption of war with France in 1803, he described the readiness of the British people to join the volunteers as 'an insurrection of loyalty' - a phrase that playfully conflated contemporary anxieties about military activity, political unrest, and loyalism. Significantly, he chose to address the House for this speech in the uniform of the Woodley Cavalry Volunteers. OCLC and COPAC together record copies at only three locations (BL, Oxford, and Reading).
