AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE CIVIL WAR BOOK. FOUND ON A SOUTHERN CIVIL WAR BATTLEFIELD BY A DRUMMER BOY OF THE 79TH NEW YORK DURING THE SEIGE OF PORT ROYAL DECEMBER 6TH 1861. ORIGINAL OWNER CONFEDERATE OFFICER OF THE FIRST SOUTH CAROLINA MILITIA. Brown cloth with blind stamp design to the boards.Title in gilt on the spine.Head and tail caps expertly repaired. Previous owner's signatures to the front pastedown and front fly lesf.Half-Title. Eighty-Eight plates. The provenance of the book tells a historical tale that is unrivaled and worthy of a museum. Found in the front is an inscription by John G. Barnwell, Jr., who served in the 1st South Carolina Confederate Troops with McCreary's Regt, and in the rear is three signatures and an amazing notation by a young, nearly illiterate drummer/musician from the 79th NY, Theodore Van Velsor, who was only 19 at the time. Van Velsor notes 'drummer' nest to his name on one leaf, and the final leaf contains an amazing notation, stating, in broken English and hard to read handwriting, 'Theodore Van Velsor Picked Upe(up) on the ba-tle feld(battlefield) (undecipherable word) onn(on) decemder 6 1861(December 6th, 1861) at port rayol(at Port Royal) soth caline(South Carolina)- 79 regment(79th Regiment)' . This tells a great story, as research indicates Barnwell was involved in evacuating his family during the Port Royal seige, and more than likely dropped this book in the process, where it found its way to a young Brooklyn NY musicians hands. The book is tight and square and is in excellent condition. An amazing piece of Civil War History. Size: 6.0" x 8.0" Language: eng. N° de ref. de la librería 010555
